Exploring Science Club
We live in Puget Sound, but what does that mean? How do we get our drinkable water? What happens to the water on the streets when it rains? In this ten week session, we will explore water as our main topic. We will dive into the water cycle and learn what a watershed is. As well, we will investigate QAE playground while using our observation skills. The play ground is the ideal outdoor classroom to inspire children to ask questions.
Students will learn how science is connected to other subjects (like reading, writing, math, art, social studies, etc.) and to every day life. They will use their natural curiosity to answer questions driven by their own interests, search and summarize information, make conclusions and share their findings with their peers on the last session of the club. They will learn how to ask researchable questions.
Exploring Science is a fun way to expose students to science and make it relevant to their daily activities. At the end of each session, we will reflect on our experiences on a club's journal, each student will keep an individual journal.
Science is everywhere, with the recent findings and challenges in multiple STEM areas it is crucial to expose children to science and make it accessible to everyone. Exploring Science is a fun way to inspire and promote science education.
When children investigate their own questions, it creates ownership and gives them self confidence. Asking questions increases their critical thinking and analytical skills. Sharing their findings improves their communications skills and builds a sense of community.
Instructor Isadora Jimenez has worked as research scientist at UW and WSU on diverse projects. She has experience working with children and youth through volunteering with various local organizations. Join the club, discover the scientist within you and have fun!
