Debate with DebateAble
DebateAble is an after-school debate program for 4th and 5th grade students throughout Seattle. DebateAble operates as a separate debate club at each school, providing children with the opportunity to learn critical thinking skills, empathy, analysis and public speaking in a fun and positive environment. Using teamwork, games, research materials and practice debates, students are taught to formulate, support and present arguments -- as well as listen, understand and respond to the arguments of others. Each 12 week session ends with the opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills that they've learned at Debate Club. Fall session concludes with a scrimmage debate directly following the final club meeting. Spring session culminates in a Saturday, inter-school debate tournament, where debaters from all participating Queen Anne and Magnolia schools are invited to participate in a fun, low-key debate competition. Family and friends of debaters are encouraged to attend both events. For more information, please visit our web site at www.debateablekids.com.

New! Greek and Latin Word Detectives
English is a vibrant, living language, and Greek and Latin roots are the foundation of more words and expressions than most of us can even imagine. In this program, through interactive games, vibrant conversations and other fun activities, your student will learn the origins and connections of the roots within words we use on a daily basis. Knowledge of Greek and Latin root words incorporates history. It helps children to figure out the meaning of words, making them better readers, writers and spellers. It promotes creativity and articulation in learners of all ages. But more than anything else, it teaches students to be thrilled by language.
Here's a slice of what this course teaches--
The root word -FLECT- means "to bend." On this foundation, we build:
· REFLECT: Re (back) + flect (bend) = to bend back an image (like what you see in a mirror)
· GENUFLECT: Genu (knee) +flect (bend) = to bend the knee, or to kneel
· DEFLECT: De(away) + flect (bend) = to bend, or turn, something away from you.
.... and there are hundreds more.
Children who study Greek and Latin roots are Word Detectives. Learning the foundational roots, prefixes and suffixes of the words we use every day will help them to navigate the clues of language throughout their entire lives.
