Give your child the opportunity to learn a world language! Enrollment for the Language Link classes at Queen Anne Elementary is now open, so register now to secure a space!
Art, music, drama and games guide the curriculum for our Chinese, French, and Spanish classes. Beginning and intermediate levels are offered. The focus is on oral proficiency and classes are conducted entirely in the target language so that students are fully engaged in the language and culture they are studying. The language teachers are dynamic, creative and love sharing their languages and cultures with children!
For the 2012-2013 school year, Language Link will offer Spanish (at 5 different levels), Mandarin (at 2 levels), and French (at 2 levels) at QAE. The classes will run 15 weeks per session. The Fall session starts in early October 2012 and ends around early February 2013. The Spring session starts in mid February 2013 and ends in early June 2013. The classes will meet 2, 3, or 5 days per week. Most of the classes are in the morning at 8:15 – 9:15 am. One Spanish Novice Low class will be in the afternoons at 3:40 – 4:45 pm.

Language Proficiency Evaluation:
- When enrolling for language classes, you will see competency level expectations for the year for all classes – these are based on Language Link’s self assessment program, linguafolio which was developed and tested last year and are being refined for implementation this year, and OPSI recognized standards. Linguafolio self assessments will be conducted for 2nd-5th grades this year.
- Objective evaluation is highly recommended. For an extra cost of $38 per year, you can sign up for the STAMP 4se language proficiency test consisting of two objective, proctored tests twice per year (in late October and May) that gives parents concrete feedback regarding their children's progress in their target language. More information on this test is shown below. This test is optional, but highly recommended for families who would like to track their student's progress. You will see this as an additional cart item at registration.
- The focus of all Language Link classes is oral proficiency. Classes will be structured in a way that 50% of the class time is spent on oral practice, whether in the context of doing art projects, drama, games or physical activities. We believe there is no better way in learning a language than using it!
- Weekly lesson plans with suggested optional home activities are posted in the Language Link wikispace every week for every class. Parents supporting language learning at home helps students make even more progress in class and it also communicates that you value your children’s language learning.
- Enrolling families must agree to Language Link’s classroom policy during registration, which is implemented to ensure optimal classroom learning environment for all children. Repeated misbehaviors may result in withdrawal of children without tuition refund.
- Please promptly communicate family needs or preferences, such as offering new language classes, class times (such as moving AM classes to PM), or to increase the number of days per week for a class, etc., with Barbara Ford. If interests are high, Language Link will try their best to meet these needs.
This test is an OSPI recognized web-based test in a real-world context. It
- Engages students with a computer-adaptive assessment that helps them to understand their own proficiency level.
- Assesses students/ proficiency in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.
- Is facilitated by a proctor and results are statistically validated. Reading and Listening scores are available immediately, and Writing and Speaking are scored externally by certified raters and available within 2-3 business days.
- Scores are reported by district/institution, school, class and individual at proficiency benchmarks related to ACTFL levels novice through advanced.
A summary of the classes, the suggested age groups, class meeting times, and the tuition for a 15-week session are listed in the below table.
